Community focused and locally prioritised

Our goal is to use our farm to grow nutritious, organic produce to support the local community, providing it to you at our grocery store at reasonable prices, while supporting our community by offering a  wide range of products from local vendors.

Our Story

Most North Fork residents would make an hour long drive to Fresno or Oakhurst in order to purchase their groceries, sending money out of the local economy and lowering our sense of community. That is why we wanted to open a grocery store in North Fork focused on selling locally sourced goods, mostly organic produce and to support the local economy by providing a space for producers and artisans to sell their goods. In 2013 we started a fund-raising campaign to raise the money we needed to bring this vision to North Fork. We were overwhelmed by the support of the community who helped us to raise $32,000 needed to open our store in North Fork. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen!

Our Herbal Products

The herbs at Kern Family Farm are nourished by wild water of our mountain springs, radiant Sierra sunshine, and loving hands of intentional herb growers and herbalism students. The herbs harness wild mountain energy and transform it into potent herbal medicine that supports the mind, body, spirit, and soul. They are a blessing on our farm, and we’re excited to share them with our community.

Tinctures

We process our organically grown medicinal plants into small-batch tinctures throughout the growing season when they are harvested. This extracts and preserves their medicinal compounds into organic alcohol, and makes them convenient to take.

Our tinctures are available at our store, The Gnarly Carrot. We also create the signature blend provided to guests at Chateau du Sureau resort in Oakhurst.

Salves

Our salves are food for the skin! We harvest our vibrant organically grown herbs and create healing skin medicine with them. Our most popular salves are our Sunshine Salve, made with Calendula flowers & our Repair Salve made with Plantain and Chickweed.

Our salves are available at our store, The Gnarly Carrot, and at our seasonal farmer’s markets.

Dried Herbs & Teas

Throughout the growing season we dry our herbs in our professional on-farm herb drying shed. This process preserves their medicinal compounds, colors, scents, and flavors, and allows us to create delicious seasonal tea blends throughout the year.

Distilled Hydrosols & Essential Oils

Distillation transforms our aromatic herbs into sensual and healing hydrosol and essential oil. We take our copper alembic still (seen above with spearmint leaves) and stuff it to the brim with fragrant plant material grown on our farm. Fire, Water, Earth, and Air combine to distill out the aromatic and deeply healing properties of the herbs for use on the skin, around the house, or for aromatherapy.

Our seasonal teas are available at our store, The Gnarly Carrot, as well as our seasonal farmer’s markets. We also create teas for our classes and local restaurants.

Bulk dried herbs are available to pre-order for the 2022 season.
